The VIP car-service industry is about to undergo a massive shift as the 2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE-Class arrives to challenge the dominance of traditional full-size SUVs. Designed from the ground up as an electric "private jet on wheels," this new EV prioritizes rear-seat pampering over driver ergonomics. Unlike the commercial-first Sprinter or Metris, the VLE-Class is a dedicated luxury passenger vehicle aimed squarely at upscale transport fleets and high-net-worth individuals.
Mercedes-Benz executives are actively avoiding the term "minivan," instead referring to the luxury-focused trims as a "Grand Limousine." The vehicle is built to accommodate up to eight passengers, but the flagship configuration is a spacious 2/2/2 layout. In the upscale Exclusive trim, the driver's seat actually features less fore-and-aft travel to reserve maximum cabin space for the electrically adjustable sliding rear seats - a synchronized movement the company calls a "seat ballet."
MBUX Rear Space Experience and Cabin Tech
The defining feature of the 2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE-Class is its 31.3-inch panoramic ceiling-mounted screen. Dubbed the Rear Space Experience (MBUX Rear Space Experience), the display pairs with a Burmester audio system featuring Dolby Atmos processing to create a mobile theater. The startup sequence can even be programmed to automatically raise the window sunshades as the screen deploys. Remarkably, this massive screen is available even on the base model.
Access to the cabin is handled by dual power-sliding side doors with roll-down windows. These can be operated via B-pillar switches, by the driver, or remotely through a smartphone app, making curbside pickups in congested urban environments seamless.
Powertrain, 800-Volt Charging, and Efficiency
The VLE-Class launches with two distinct powertrain options. The base VLE300 features a single front-mounted motor producing 272 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque. The flagship VLE400 4Matic utilizes a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, delivering a combined 413 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Both models rely on an 800-volt architecture and a nickel-manganese-cobalt battery with 115 kWh of usable capacity.
When connected to a 300-kW DC fast-charger, the VLE can add a claimed 220 miles of range in just 15 minutes. While official EPA numbers are pending, Mercedes estimates a WLTP range of 650 kilometers, which translates to roughly 320 to 340 EPA miles. During a 20-mile efficiency test loop in Spain, the EV proved highly capable; while Mercedes staffers set a target consumption of 15.2 kWh per 100 kilometers, test drivers utilizing maximum regeneration and predictive driving managed to beat it with a rate of 14.8 kWh per 100 kilometers.
Urban Agility and Automated Maneuvering
Despite its massive footprint, the VLE-Class is engineered for tight city streets. The secret is its seven degrees of rear-wheel steering. The European model (209.0 inches long with a 131.6-inch wheelbase) achieves a turning radius of just 35.7 feet. The United States market will exclusively receive the long-wheelbase variant, which stretches to 215.9 inches overall with a 138.0-inch wheelbase, resulting in a slightly larger 37.5-foot turning circle. Even the longer US model easily outmaneuvers a Chevrolet Suburban, which requires 41.5 feet to turn.
To protect the vehicle in tight spaces, Mercedes equipped the VLE with 10 external cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The automated park-assistance function handles tight spots with an 80 percent success rate, but the standout feature is the Reverse Maneuvering Function (Reverse Maneuvering Function). The system memorizes the last 490 feet of forward travel and can autonomously retrace that exact path in reverse - a lifesaver when a driver encounters a blocked alleyway.

However, the real challenge for Mercedes will not be the vehicle's luxury, but the infrastructure required to support it. Commercial car services operate on tight schedules where downtime equals lost revenue. While the 300-kW charging capability (220 miles in 15 minutes) is impressive on paper, fleet operators will need guaranteed access to high-speed DC fast-chargers near airports and city centers to make the transition viable. If Mercedes can secure or incentivize that charging infrastructure, the VLE-Class could easily trigger the same industry-wide shift we saw when sedans were abandoned for SUVs two decades ago.
