UK fintech giant Revolut has secured conditional approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national bank. This critical milestone brings the company one step closer to launching a full-service US banking operation by 2027, shifting away from its current reliance on American partner banks.

The proposed Revolut Bank US will be headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. To support this expansion, the company plans to invest approximately $95 million and create around 160 new jobs in the area. However, the fintech must still secure final green lights from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Federal Reserve before officially opening its digital doors.

Conditional OCC approval is an important first step towards establishing the proposed Revolut Bank US. It gives us the foundation to build in the world’s largest financial market.

This US milestone follows a massive year of international growth for the app, which now boasts over 80 million customers globally. Revolut successfully secured its UK banking license in March and added a French banking license in August, cementing its transition from a borderless payment app to a fully regulated global financial institution.

What the US Charter Means for Customers

A national charter allows Revolut to offer banking products directly rather than routing them through third-party institutions. The initial three-year strategy will focus heavily on expatriates and users needing multicurrency banking, with the following services planned:

  • Direct Accounts: Checking and savings accounts managed entirely in-house.
  • Credit Products: Installment loans and proprietary credit cards.
  • Digital Assets: A planned stablecoin integrated directly into its US banking operations.
  • Foreign Exchange: Enhanced borderless payments and currency swapping.

Notably, mortgages are excluded from the company's initial rollout strategy, as the firm prioritizes high-mobility financial tools over long-term real estate lending.

The Stablecoin Differentiator in Traditional Banking

Revolut’s push for a US charter isn't just about cutting out middleman fees; it is a strategic play to blend traditional banking with Web3 infrastructure. By explicitly including a stablecoin in its US banking operation plans, Revolut is positioning itself ahead of legacy banks that remain hesitant about digital assets.

If the FDIC and Federal Reserve grant final approval, Revolut will possess a rare advantage: the regulatory trust of a national bank combined with the agility of a crypto-friendly fintech. This dual approach could force domestic competitors to accelerate their own digital asset strategies or risk losing the lucrative expatriate and digital nomad demographics.
