Malaysia's electric vehicle market is experiencing explosive growth in 2026, defying a broader automotive industry slowdown. Recent registration data reveals that EV adoption has more than doubled in the first quarter, driven by aggressive pricing and the overwhelming dominance of local models like the Proton e.MAS 5. This rapid shift highlights a critical turning point for consumers transitioning away from traditional combustion engines.

According to the latest JPJ open data portal statistics, 4,717 EVs were registered in March 2026 alone. This marks a significant 58.5% year-on-year increase compared to the 2,976 units recorded in March 2025. Interestingly, this surge occurs against the backdrop of a shrinking overall car market. The Total Industry Volume (TIV) for March 2026 fell by 12% year-on-year to 67,846 units.

Consequently, fully electric vehicles now account for 6.95% of total registrations in the country. This translates to roughly one in 14 new vehicles hitting Malaysian roads being an EV. The momentum is even more pronounced when looking at the entire first quarter, where total EV registrations reached 14,591 units. This represents a massive 113.7% year-on-year jump from the 6,827 units registered during the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, the broader automotive market remained relatively stagnant, with the Q1 TIV dipping slightly by 2.9% to 192,531 units. Traditional internal combustion engine vehicles are feeling the pressure of this transition. Petrol vehicle registrations declined by 8% in the first three months, while diesel registrations plummeted by a staggering 78.7%, dropping from 2,748 units to just 586.

Proton has firmly established itself as the undisputed leader of Malaysia's EV transition. The Proton e.MAS 5 dominated the charts in March 2026 with 2,071 units registered, capturing a massive lead over its competitors. The BYD Atto 3 secured the second spot with 441 units, followed closely by the Proton e.MAS 7 with 306 registrations. The Tesla Model Y claimed fourth place with 179 units, while the Chery iCaur V23 rounded out the top five with 160 units. Notably, the Perodua QV-E also made its debut in the Top 30 list, recording 11 registrations.

Q1 2026 Top 5 EV Models in Malaysia

Rank EV Model Units Registered (Q1 2026)
1 Proton e.MAS 5 6,701
2 BYD Atto 3 999
3 Proton e.MAS 7 754
4 Zeekr 7X 696
5 Chery iCaur V23 607

Looking at overall brand performance for March, Proton accounted for 50% of all new EVs registered, totaling 2,377 units. BYD followed in second place with 879 units, and Tesla took third with 338 units. Chery and Zeekr completed the top five brands with 265 and 177 units, respectively. The Zeekr 7X notably stands out as the most popular premium EV model for the quarter, while the rugged Chery iCaur V23 continues to attract buyers looking for off-road aesthetics.

The Market Shift: Affordability Overcomes Tax Changes

Despite the conclusion of the completely built-up (CBU) tax holiday for EVs, the Malaysian market is accelerating its transition away from fossil fuels. The staggering 113.7% Q1 growth proves that consumer demand is no longer solely reliant on government tax exemptions. Instead, the availability of highly competitive, locally branded options like the Proton e.MAS 5 is driving mainstream adoption.

Proton's strategy of delivering affordable electric mobility has clearly resonated with buyers, allowing them to capture half of the entire EV market share. As traditional petrol and diesel registrations continue to slide, automakers will need to aggressively expand their electric portfolios to survive. The rapid rise of premium models like the Zeekr 7X also indicates that Malaysian buyers are willing to invest in high-end EVs, provided the technology and range meet their daily commuting needs.
