Amazon is aggressively escalating its space race against Starlink, filing a massive application with the FCC to launch 5,105 low-Earth-orbit satellites for its Amazon Leo satellite internet service. The move, which follows the company's recent acquisition of Globalstar, aims to deliver high-speed broadband and direct-to-device connectivity to smartphones globally. With 390 satellites already in orbit, the tech giant is positioning itself to disrupt the global telecommunications market.

The company announced that its direct-to-device (D2D) system will operate alongside existing networks and the newly acquired Globalstar constellation. This infrastructure is designed to provide internet access in remote areas where traditional cellular networks are vulnerable or entirely unavailable. To ensure high-speed and low-latency performance, Amazon will distribute its satellites across five orbital shells, including mid-latitude, high-latitude, and near-polar regions.

To optimize network routing, the satellites will feature inter-satellite laser connectivity. They will also process signals directly in orbit before relaying them back to Earth, significantly improving overall network efficiency.

How to Connect to the Amazon Leo Network

While the full constellation will take years to deploy, Amazon plans to roll out an initial fixed service later this year. Here is how users will access the network:

  • Compatible smartphone with a built-in satellite chipset.
  • An official Amazon high-performance antenna.
  1. Connect via a dedicated terminal. This enables high-speed home or business broadband using the Leo Nano, Leo Pro, or Leo Ultra antennas.
  2. Link directly through your mobile device. This ensures seamless direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity on supported smartphones without requiring external hardware.
  3. Access emergency services via Apple integration. This provides immediate Emergency SOS capabilities on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models, leveraging Amazon's existing partnership with Apple.

Amazon recently secured a waiver from the FCC, extending its July 30, 2026 deadline to launch approximately 700 satellites. Despite this slight delay, the company remains committed to deploying the entire 5,105-satellite constellation by July 30, 2029.

While Starlink currently dominates the satellite internet market with its massive orbital presence, Amazon’s strategy reveals a highly calculated long game. By acquiring Globalstar and deeply integrating with Apple's hardware ecosystem, Amazon is bypassing the need to sell bulky consumer dishes for its mobile tier. The D2D approach turns every compatible iPhone into a potential Amazon Leo node by default.

Furthermore, the decision to process signals in orbit rather than relying entirely on ground stations could significantly reduce latency for mobile users. Starlink may have the first-mover advantage in fixed broadband, but Amazon is building a seamless mobile moat that could make satellite connectivity an invisible, built-in feature rather than a standalone subscription.
