The BYD Sealion 08 has officially disrupted the premium electric SUV market, securing over 12,000 orders within 24 hours of its launch on September 2. Buyers looking for ultra-fast charging and extended range are flocking to the new flagship, which starts at a highly competitive 229,900 yuan (approximately $34,000). Available in both fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations, the Sealion 08 represents the pinnacle of BYD's Ocean lineup.
According to Zhang Zhou, head of sales at BYD’s Ocean division, the vehicle is already off to a strong start. "Full steam ahead, production at breakneck speed," Zhou noted, adding that the SUV is now being shipped nationwide to meet the surging demand.
The standout feature of the BYD Sealion 08 is its underlying power architecture. All variants are equipped with BYD’s latest Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology. This system allows the battery to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, while a near-full recharge to 97% takes only nine minutes.
For the EV version, which starts at 239,900 yuan ($35,500), a massive 115.072 kWh battery delivers up to 900 km (599 miles) of CLTC range in rear-wheel-drive configurations. The all-wheel-drive models sacrifice a bit of efficiency for performance, offering up to 800 km (497 miles). Meanwhile, the PHEV variant utilizes a 55.843 kWh battery to achieve a pure electric range of 400 km (248 miles) and a staggering combined range of 1,650 km (1,025 miles).

Inside the cabin, BYD has packed the Sealion 08 with high-end technology and luxury amenities that rival established premium brands. The vehicle measures 5,115 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height with a 3,030 mm wheelbase. For comparison, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 measures 5,060 mm long, 1,980 mm wide, and 1,790 mm tall, with a slightly longer 3,130 mm wheelbase.

By securing 12,000 orders in a single day - following the massive success of the Great Tang SUV, which secured 30,000 first-day orders and over 100,000 within two weeks - the Chinese automaker is successfully executing a rapid upmarket expansion. Last month alone, BYD sold 11,010 Great Tang SUVs, bringing its cumulative total to 27,212 since mid-June.
Offering a 25-speaker Devialet system, AR HUDs, and five-minute fast charging at a $34,000 price point puts immense pressure on legacy automakers. As BYD pushes its luxury sub-brand Denza into Europe and the UK, traditional brands will struggle to match this combination of aggressive pricing, advanced battery chemistry, and premium standard features.
