Toyota and Uber have joined forces to accelerate the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles among ride-hailing drivers across Europe. The new partnership aims to lower the financial barriers to entry by offering flexible financing, leasing options, and smart usage-based insurance for both new and approved used vehicles. The rollout, which begins this July across 10 European countries, is designed to support hundreds of thousands of active individual drivers and fleet operators.
This initiative addresses the growing pressure on the ride-hailing industry to meet strict European emission standards while managing rising operational costs. By providing a multi-pathway approach, drivers can choose between battery-electric models or hybrid vehicles depending on their local charging infrastructure and daily mileage requirements.
"Professional drivers need electrified vehicles that work for them economically as well as operationally," explained Leonardo Carluccio, VP of Sales at Toyota Motor Europe. He noted that the partnership improves immediate access to vehicles and mobility services, supporting the gradual shift toward lower-emission fleets across European cities.
Partnering with Toyota allows us to offer an integrated solution that addresses vehicle ownership, financing, and maintenance. By lowering ownership obstacles, we are accelerating electrification while supporting drivers’ livelihoods in a changing world.
- Raoul Philipse, Sr. Director Central Operations, Uber
To deliver a unified mobility package, the partnership integrates four distinct Toyota divisions, each handling a specific aspect of the vehicle ownership lifecycle:
- Toyota Motor Europe: Adapting hybrid and battery-electric vehicle offers to suit local market demands and infrastructure conditions.
- Toyota Financial Services: Providing flexible financing and leasing solutions to help drivers access Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
- Toyota Insurance Services: Delivering smart-connected, usage-based insurance tailored to the high-mileage needs of professional drivers.
- KINTO Europe: Expanding access to approved used vehicles, providing a crucial lower-cost entry point for independent contractors.
The Fleet Strategy Driving Europe's EV Transition
This collaboration highlights a critical shift in how automakers are approaching the European market amid tightening emission regulations. By leveraging Uber's massive driver network, Toyota guarantees a steady pipeline of high-mileage fleet customers for both its new battery-electric models and its established hybrid lineup. This ensures consistent vehicle turnover and valuable real-world telemetry data for Toyota's connected services.
Furthermore, the inclusion of KINTO Europe to supply approved used vehicles is a strategic masterstroke. It acknowledges the economic reality that brand-new EVs remain prohibitively expensive for many independent contractors. By creating a structured pipeline for second-hand electrified vehicles, Toyota and Uber are ensuring that lower-income drivers aren't priced out of the ride-hailing market as major cities implement stricter low-emission zones.
