Telegram to Launch Native Zero-Fee Gram Wallet for 1 Billion Users

Sending cryptocurrency is about to become as effortless as sending a text message for over a billion people. Telegram is preparing to launch a native, non-custodial Telegram Gram wallet directly into its messaging app this summer, eliminating transaction fees and complex exchange setups.

The upcoming integration marks a massive shift from the platform's current crypto offerings. Unlike the existing @wallet bot - which is operated by a third-party company called The Open Platform and defaults to custodial mode - this new wallet will be baked directly into every version of the app. Users will hold their own private keys from day one, ensuring complete control over their funds without relying on a middleman.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov emphasized the unprecedented scale of the update, calling it "the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history."

This summer will see the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history. Instant zero-fee crypto transactions for over a billion users are about to become reality.

Following the announcement, the native Gram token surged roughly 7%, climbing above $1.52 and pushing its market capitalization to $4.18 billion. However, it still requires an 88% rally to reach its May 2026 peak of $2.89, and remains far below its all-time high of $8.25 set in June 2024. This momentum is part of a broader revival strategy for the network.

After a lengthy legal battle with the SEC in 2020 forced Telegram to return $1.2 billion to investors and pay an $18.5 million penalty, community developers sustained the blockchain as Toncoin. Durov retook control in 2026, successfully rebranding the network back to Gram in June following an 81% community vote.

What the Telegram Gram Wallet Means for Users

  • Zero-Fee Transfers: Users will be able to send instant payments to contacts without paying network gas fees or exchange withdrawal costs.
  • True Self-Custody: Because the wallet is non-custodial, your assets cannot be frozen or seized by Telegram or any third-party entity.
  • Built-In Access: There will be no need to search for or activate a separate bot; the wallet will be natively integrated into the main interface.

The Trojan Horse for Mainstream Web3 Adoption

The introduction of a native Telegram Gram wallet is not just a crypto update; it is a direct challenge to traditional payment processors. While Meta's Diem project collapsed under regulatory pressure, Telegram played a longer, smarter game. By letting the open-source community incubate Toncoin during the SEC fallout, Durov allowed the network to mature before officially bringing it back in-house as Gram.

Now, by offering zero-fee transactions to a billion users, Telegram is positioning itself as the WeChat of the West. Small businesses and creators in emerging markets, who currently lose significant margins to credit card networks and remittance fees, will suddenly have a frictionless, global payment channel.

If Telegram can simplify the complex key management usually associated with self-custody, this rollout will be the catalyst that finally pushes Web3 out of the speculative trading bubble and into everyday commerce.
