Telegram Overhauls Android and iOS With New Interface and Auto Group Ownership Transfer

Telegram has released a significant update introducing the largest interface redesign on Android in recent years, alongside enhanced group management tools and new user-facing features. The update, available in version 12.4.1 and higher, fundamentally restructures how users navigate the app while introducing practical improvements for group administrators managing communities of any size.

The Android app now features a fully redesigned interface built from the ground up for faster navigation and improved search functionality. A new bottom navigation bar provides quick access to chats, settings, profiles, and additional options, replacing the previous menu structure. The interface code has been rebuilt for enhanced efficiency and responsiveness, with users able to adjust interface effects through Settings > Power Saving to optimize performance and battery life on their devices.

iOS and iPad users also receive meaningful improvements, including additional Liquid Glass effects, a redesigned media viewer, and new preview panels for sticker and emoji packs. iPad users gain a new keyboard shortcut⌘+Enterfor sending messages, streamlining the typing experience on larger screens.

One of the most significant administrative improvements addresses a long-standing pain point: group ownership succession. When a group owner leaves, ownership now automatically transfers to one of the administrators after one week, ensuring continuity without manual intervention. This eliminates scenarios where groups become orphaned and unmanageable when their creator departs.

For immediate transfers, group owners can now assign a new owner at any time without leaving the chat. The process requires the new owner to be promoted to administrator with full permissions first, then the current owner can initiate the transfer through the group settings. This flexibility allows for planned leadership transitions or emergency handovers when needed.

Why this matters: For community managers and group creators, this feature prevents the loss of control over active communities. A group with thousands of members suddenly losing its owner could previously become permanently locked, with no way to add new members or remove problematic users. The automatic transfer mechanism ensures groups remain functional even when creators unexpectedly leave.

Telegram introduced a new crafting system for collectible gifts, allowing users to combine up to four gifts to create Uncommon, Rare, Epic, or Legendary items with unique artwork and effects. Using multiple gifts with the same attributes increases the likelihood of those attributes appearing in the final crafted item. Collectible gifts can be securely bought and sold on Telegram's Gift Marketplace, creating a secondary economy within the platform.

Bot developers now have greater control over user experience through customizable bot buttons. Developers can assign colors and emojis to buttons, making interfaces easier to navigate and highlighting specific actions. This enhancement allows bots to provide more intuitive interfaces for users performing common tasks like payments, reservations, or information lookups.

Consider a Telegram group with 50,000 members focused on technology news. The original creator, who has been inactive for months, suddenly deletes their account. Under the previous system, the group would become permanently lockedno new members could join, and problematic users couldn't be removed.
