The Sindh government is launching a massive overhaul of its public transit network, introducing a dedicated Sindh EV taxi service and double-decker buses to modernize urban mobility across the province. The initiative also accelerates ongoing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects to address growing transportation demands and reduce traffic congestion.
The sweeping transport expansion was announced during a high-level review meeting chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. During the session, provincial officials briefed the minister on the logistical progress of both ongoing infrastructure developments and upcoming transit fleet additions.
Expanding the Peoples Bus Service and EV Fleet
A central pillar of the new initiative is the expansion of the existing Peoples Bus Service, which will soon be extended to cover the Qambar Shahdadkot - Larkana route. Officials confirmed that preparations for this specific corridor are already actively underway, aiming to connect these key districts with reliable public transit.
Simultaneously, the government is finalizing the operational framework for the province's upcoming electric vehicle taxi service. Arrangements for the induction of double-decker buses are also in the final stages, which will significantly increase passenger capacity on high-density urban routes.
Minister Memon directed transport authorities to ensure that all administrative and logistical arrangements for these new routes are completed without delay. He emphasized that the primary goal of expanding the Peoples Bus Service network is to guarantee public access to affordable and reliable transportation.
Empowering Women's Mobility and BRT Acceleration
Beyond traditional mass transit, the provincial government is continuing its push to support independent mobility for women. A dedicated pink scooty distribution drive is scheduled to take place in Mirpurkhas on September 5, forming a key part of the government's ongoing socio-economic initiatives.
To support the influx of new vehicles, Memon also ordered that construction work on all pending BRT projects be strictly expedited. He instructed the relevant provincial departments to maintain close coordination to prevent any further delays in execution and infrastructure rollout.
The Infrastructure Challenge Behind the Transit Push
The introduction of an EV taxi service and the September 5 pink scooty drive signal a clear shift in Sindh's approach to urban mobility, moving away from purely reactive measures toward sustainable, inclusive planning. However, deploying electric taxis at scale requires a robust, province-wide DC fast-charging infrastructure - a logistical hurdle that the government must address to make the EV fleet viable for daily operations.
Furthermore, while expanding the Peoples Bus Service to the Qambar Shahdadkot - Larkana route improves rural-urban connectivity, the true test of this overhaul lies in the accelerated BRT execution. If the government can successfully synchronize the launch of double-decker buses with completed BRT corridors, it could fundamentally resolve the severe transit bottlenecks that have long plagued the province's major economic hubs.
