Apple's pursuit of an ultra-thin form factor with the original iPhone Air came with a notable compromise: battery life. Now, early supply chain leaks indicate the upcoming iPhone Air 2 will address this pain point directly with an 11% increase in raw battery capacity, alongside a much-needed camera upgrade.
According to serial leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the iPhone Air 2 is expected to feature a 3,500mAh battery, a measurable step up from the 3,149mAh cell found in the current model. Fitting a larger battery into the same chassis requires significant internal engineering. To achieve this, Apple is reportedly adopting Samsung-made Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) OLED technology. This advanced panel design could make the display thinner, freeing up crucial internal space for the larger power cell without increasing the device's overall dimensions.
The internal redesign will also need to accommodate a second camera. Addressing a major customer complaint about the current single-lens setup, Apple plans to add an Ultra Wide lens to the iPhone Air 2, bringing its photography capabilities closer to the more affordable iPhone 17. Powering the device will be the next-generation A20 chip, built on Apple's new 2nm process. This node shrink promises better energy efficiency, which should further extend battery life regardless of the physical capacity increase. The device is slated for a spring 2027 launch.
Foldables, Price Hikes, and the iPhone 18e
Beyond the Air 2, the Chinese supply chain has shed light on Apple's broader roadmap. Digital Chat Station claims the "iPhone Ultra 2 project" - Apple's second-generation foldable - has been formally approved for development, likely retaining the book-style display of the upcoming first-generation model.
Meanwhile, leaker Fixed Focus Digital warns that the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and the first foldable iPhone will launch this September with higher price tags than originally predicted. Finally, budget-conscious buyers may be disappointed to learn that the lower-cost iPhone 18e will reportedly stick to the same 60Hz low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT panel as the current iPhone 17e, missing out on ProMotion technology.
The Thinness Compromise Reaches Its Limit
The leaked specifications for the iPhone Air 2 highlight a fundamental shift in Apple's hardware strategy. The original Air proved that consumers are willing to pay a premium for a striking, ultra-thin design, but the immediate pivot to a 3,500mAh battery and a dual-camera system shows that aesthetics cannot permanently override core functionality.
