MercurySteam Confirms Development of Metroid Ravenous for Switch 2

MercurySteam Confirms Development of Metroid Ravenous for Switch 2
100%

After a brief period of uncertainty following the latest Nintendo Direct, Spanish developer MercurySteam has seemingly confirmed it is the studio behind Metroid Ravenous. The upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, which serves as a vibrant follow-up to 2021's critically acclaimed Metroid Dread, initially left fans guessing when the developer's name was notably absent from the reveal trailer and official press materials.

Nintendo is notorious for keeping developer identities under wraps until a game is close to launch, but MercurySteam broke the silence through social media. The studio retweeted the official Metroid Ravenous trailer, adding a ninja and a heart emoji to playfully acknowledge their stealthy involvement. Shortly after, the company shared the same trailer on LinkedIn, effectively ending the speculation.

Showcased during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, Metroid Ravenous builds heavily on the foundation established by Metroid Dread. It retains the classic side-scrolling action but introduces dynamic perspective shifts that alter how players navigate the environment. Visually, the new title pivots away from the oppressive, sterile atmosphere of its predecessor, opting for a more colorful and energetic aesthetic.

This project marks a crucial return to form for MercurySteam, the team previously known for the Castlevania Lords of Shadow series. Following the massive success of Metroid Dread, the studio shifted focus to an original IP, Blades of Fire. While that game received decent reviews, it ultimately underperformed commercially, leading to financial strain, corporate restructuring, and layoffs just a few months ago.

A High-Stakes Return to Planet Zebes

Securing the development contract for Metroid Ravenous is more than just a prestige win for MercurySteam; it is a necessary stabilizing force after the commercial disappointment of Blades of Fire. By launching exclusively on the Switch 2 on January 28, 2027, the studio is positioned at the forefront of Nintendo's next-generation hardware push.

The shift toward a more colorful, dynamic art style suggests Nintendo is confident in expanding the 2D Metroid audience beyond its hardcore, horror-leaning roots. If MercurySteam can replicate the tight, responsive gameplay of Dread while leveraging the upgraded processing power of the Switch 2 for those ambitious perspective shifts, Ravenous could easily become a system seller in the console's early lifecycle.
