Apple is overhauling the iOS 27 Home app with deep Apple Intelligence integration, fundamentally changing how HomeKit Secure Video processes and delivers security alerts. Instead of bombarding users with generic motion notifications, the system now generates context-aware written summaries and groups related events across multiple cameras. These updates aim to drastically reduce notification fatigue while providing a clearer picture of household activity.

The new features leverage on-device AI to analyze footage without requiring users to manually scrub through video timelines. While the most advanced AI capabilities require newer hardware, Apple is also rolling out foundational upgrades, including a massive resolution bump for security cameras and improved connectivity protocols for smart home accessories.

The standout addition to the iOS 27 Home app is the introduction of Apple Intelligence Summaries. The system can now recognize people, animals, vehicles, and packages, generating highly specific alerts such as "a dog sat on the floor" or "two people were in the room." By tapping into the Photo Library, cameras equipped with facial recognition can identify specific individuals and include their names in the notification summaries.

To further cut down on alert clutter, the Home app now features a Reduce Notifications toggle. The iOS 27 Home app also introduces an Energy tab, allowing users to track power consumption from compatible accessories like smart plugs. However, Apple has not yet enabled the ability to trigger automations based on this energy data. Additionally, users can now trigger remote software updates for their Apple TV directly from the Home app, mirroring the existing functionality for HomePod devices.

Apple has implemented Thread 1.4, resulting in faster pairing times and quicker accessory updates, particularly for Matter-enabled devices. The interface for adding new Matter accessories has also been simplified to reduce setup friction. Furthermore, Apple claims that capturing and storing HomeKit Secure Video footage is now more reliable, minimizing the chances of missed activity.

To access the Apple Intelligence features, users must have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, alongside an Apple TV running tvOS 27 or a HomePod running HomePod Software 27. HomeKit Secure Video still requires an iCloud+ subscription: the 50GB plan supports a single camera, the 200GB plan supports up to five, and the 2TB or higher plans allow for unlimited cameras.

The shift from 1080p to 4K is a massive win for raw security detail, but the real game-changer in the iOS 27 Home app is the aggressive reduction in notification fatigue. By combining sequential events - like a car pulling in and a door unlocking - into a single intelligent alert, Apple is solving one of the most irritating pain points of DIY smart home security.

This update positions HomeKit not just as a passive device manager, but as a proactive security concierge that rivals expensive subscription services like Ring or Nest.
