Hyundai is officially tackling EV range anxiety by introducing a new lineup of Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs), promising massive driving distances without the need for massive battery packs. Leading the charge is the upcoming Hyundai Santa Fe EREV, slated to hit the United States in the first half of 2027, alongside a luxury counterpart from Genesis. For drivers hesitant to rely entirely on underdeveloped charging infrastructure, this middle-ground technology uses a gas engine strictly as an onboard generator.

The 600-Mile Santa Fe EREV

The headline figure for the upcoming Santa Fe EREV is a staggering driving range of over 600 miles (965 kilometers). According to Hyundai, this represents a 1.6 times increase in range compared to a conventionally powered version of the midsize SUV. To achieve this, the vehicle utilizes an in-house developed battery that holds only half the capacity of a fully electric equivalent. This smaller battery significantly reduces the weight penalty typically associated with large electric SUVs.

Power delivery will come from a dual-motor setup, providing an all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration that Hyundai claims will deliver an authentic EV driving experience. Crucially, the unspecified combustion engine will not drive the wheels directly; instead, it functions purely as a generator to charge the battery on the go. The Santa Fe EREV will be assembled at Hyundai's Alabama plant starting early next year, likely debuting as part of a mid-cycle facelift for the fifth-generation SUV.

Genesis Targets 640 Miles of Range

Shortly after launching its first hybrid, the GV80 Hybrid, Hyundai's luxury spin-off Genesis is also entering the EREV space. A recent teaser image suggests that the brand's first extended-range electric vehicle will be heavily based on the GV80 architecture. Genesis is targeting an even more impressive range of over 640 miles (1,030 kilometers) on a single tank of gas and a full battery charge.

This luxury EREV will feature an all-new high-performance battery designed to maximize efficiency and power output. Production for the Genesis model is scheduled to begin early next year, positioning the luxury brand to capture buyers who want premium electric performance without the logistical hurdles of pure EV ownership.

Global Expansion and the Ioniq V

Hyundai's EREV technology will not be limited to the North American market or large SUVs. The automaker plans to roll out extended-range electric vehicles across multiple market segments globally. In China, the recently launched Ioniq V - notably using a Roman numeral - will receive an EREV variant. This will be followed by a compact crossover utilizing the same powertrain architecture next year, signaling a broad strategic pivot toward range-extending technology.

The Smart Compromise for Heavy SUVs

Hyundai’s pivot toward EREVs is a highly pragmatic response to the current realities of the automotive market. While pure EVs offer zero emissions, outfitting a massive three-row SUV with a battery large enough to achieve 600 miles of range would result in a vehicle that is prohibitively heavy and expensive. By using a smaller battery paired with a gas generator, Hyundai is delivering the instant torque and smooth acceleration of an EV while completely neutralizing range anxiety.

However, this approach is not without its engineering hurdles. Combining an electric drivetrain, a high-voltage battery, and a combustion engine introduces significant mechanical complexity and maintenance requirements that pure EVs avoid. If Hyundai can keep the pricing competitive and the weight in check, the Santa Fe EREV could become the definitive bridge technology for consumers who are not quite ready to sever their ties to the gas pump.
