Halo: Campaign Evolved Drops PS Plus Requirement for Couch Co-op on PS5

Halo: Campaign Evolved Drops PS Plus Requirement for Couch Co-op on PS5

PlayStation 5 owners looking to jump into Halo: Campaign Evolved will need to jump through a few ecosystem hoops, but paying for a subscription to play on the couch isn't one of them. Following community backlash, Halo Studios has officially clarified that a PlayStation Plus subscription is not required for local split-screen co-op, correcting a previous miscommunication.

The confusion began when a community Q&A on the Halo Waypoint blog initially stated that PS5 split-screen players would both need active PS Plus subscriptions linked to Microsoft accounts. On June 21, the studio updated the post and issued an apology, confirming that while online network co-op requires PS Plus, local couch co-op does not.

We incorrectly stated that PlayStation Plus is required for local co-op splitscreen play. Local splitscreen co-op requires a PlayStation account for each player but does not require a PlayStation Plus account.

Despite the subscription reprieve, the core requirement remains: playing Halo: Campaign Evolved on any platform requires a Microsoft account and an Xbox Gamertag. The studio explained that this mandate mirrors the infrastructure used in Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite, ensuring smooth cross-platform play and cross-platform progression.

Platform-Specific Co-op Requirements

  • Xbox Series X|S: Local split-screen requires the second player to have a unique Microsoft account. Online co-op requires an active Xbox Game Pass subscription.
  • PlayStation 5: Local split-screen requires both players to be signed into PlayStation accounts linked to Microsoft accounts (no PS Plus needed). Online co-op requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
  • Steam: Players must link their Steam profile to a Microsoft account.

For those preparing for the July 28 launch, Xbox recommends creating the necessary accounts beforehand to save time once the disc is in the tray. Additionally, the Q&A addressed the sold-out Collector's Edition, noting there are currently no plans for a restock and that retail partners found no evidence of widespread scalping.

The Ecosystem Tax on Couch Co-op

Microsoft’s insistence on Xbox account integration for Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5 highlights a broader industry shift where publishers prioritize ecosystem growth over frictionless gameplay. While cross-platform progression is a genuine benefit for players who bounce between PC and console, forcing a secondary account creation for a local couch co-op session adds unnecessary friction.

The initial PS Plus miscommunication only amplified the growing frustration among players who miss the plug-and-play simplicity of older console generations. However, by securing Xbox account sign-ups from the PlayStation install base, Microsoft effectively turns Sony's hardware into an onboarding funnel for the broader Xbox network, ensuring that even when players are on a rival console, they remain tethered to the Xbox ecosystem.
