Publisher Nacon and developer crea-ture Studios have officially unveiled Werewolf: The Apocalypse Rageborn, a new Metroidvania action-adventure title launching across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Targeting fans of the classic tabletop RPG and Metroidvania enthusiasts, the game leverages dynamic shape-shifting mechanics to solve both combat and traversal challenges in a deeply interconnected world.

Set in the wild expanses of Alaska, players take on the role of Taylor, a student whose true Garou nature is awakened after his eco-activist friend is murdered. This triggers a blood-soaked quest for vengeance against corporate and supernatural threats, including Lethe Lab mercenaries and Pentex machines. The game features an organic RPG progression system where players collect mystical roots to unlock hundreds of Gift combinations.

The core gameplay loop revolves around mastering three distinct Garou forms, which players must dynamically switch between to survive:

  • Homid: The human form excels at ranged combat using firearms and crossbows, utilizing a kyoketsu shoge for mobility.
  • Lupus: The agile wolf form is designed for stealth, silent takedowns, and navigating complex platforming sections.
  • Crinos: The ultimate war form unleashes devastating Rage-fueled melee combos and smashes through environmental obstacles.

Louis Lamarche, creative director at crea-ture Studios, emphasized that the shape-shifting design inherently supports the Metroidvania structure. Enemies are specifically designed to force form changes during encounters. For example, flying drones are nearly impossible to hit in the Crinos form, requiring players to shift back to Homid to use ranged weapons.

Boss encounters, such as the fight against Leaf Lab director Blair, demand constant dynamic shifting to survive. As players explore the layered Alaskan wilderness, they will also rescue allies to build up their Den, unlocking new crafting and upgrade capabilities to push deeper into previously unreachable areas.

The Evolution of the Shape-Shifting Metroidvania

Tying Metroidvania traversal directly to a character's physical form rather than just acquired items is a smart evolution of the genre. By forcing players to constantly switch between Homid, Lupus, and Crinos mid-combat and during exploration, crea-ture Studios is ensuring that the Werewolf: The Apocalypse license is more than just a narrative backdrop.

The explicit mention of the Switch 2 alongside current-gen consoles also signals that publishers are actively preparing their mid-tier and indie-scale action games for Nintendo's next hardware cycle. If the combat fluidity matches the ambition of the interconnected Alaskan map, Rageborn could be a standout hit for fans of aggressive, exploration-heavy action games.
