ByteDance is Secretly Building a 10-Trillion Parameter AI Model to Crush Anthropic

ByteDance is quietly developing a massive artificial intelligence model boasting 10 trillion parameters, aiming directly at industry leaders like Anthropic. While Western giants dominate the headlines, the TikTok parent company has been aggressively building its infrastructure over the past three years to secure global AI dominance. This development signals a major shift for enterprise clients and developers watching the AI arms race, proving that China's tech sector is moving beyond lightweight applications into foundational, ground-up model training.

Unlike many of its Chinese peers, ByteDance has historically kept a low profile regarding its AI development, keeping its models mostly closed. However, its consumer-facing model, Doubao, has already become the most popular in China, amassing 324 million monthly active users. To support this massive scale, the company has doubled down on its cloud unit, Volcano Engine, which sells AI solutions to enterprises, and is actively pursuing ambitions to develop custom AI chips.

The Seed Team and the Ban on Distillation

The driving force behind this new 10-trillion parameter model is Seed, a dedicated development team led by former Google DeepMind scientist Wu Yonghui. The team has grown to about 2,000 members across China and overseas, encompassing core researchers, infrastructure engineers, data labelers, and translators. Crucially, the Seed team operates under a strict, independent development mandate that explicitly forbids the use of existing models from other labs.

This means ByteDance has banned model distillation - the common industry practice of compressing a large, complex AI model into a smaller, faster one by training it to copy the knowledge and outputs of a larger "teacher" model. While this independent approach has been in place for over a year and has arguably slowed their development compared to rivals, management believes it is the only path to true superiority. During a recent internal meeting, founder Zhang Yiming told the Seed team to target "world-leading model capabilities" in the long run, explicitly warning them not to worry about falling behind in the near term.

The Strategic Moat of Independent Training

Zhang Yiming's refusal to rely on model distillation reveals a calculated, high-stakes strategy that separates ByteDance from fast-following competitors. Distillation is an excellent tool for quickly launching efficient, lightweight models, but it inherently caps a model's potential; a distilled model can never surpass the intelligence of its teacher. By forcing the Seed team to build a 10-trillion parameter architecture entirely from scratch, ByteDance is accepting a temporary lag in exchange for a proprietary foundation that isn't bottlenecked by OpenAI or Anthropic's technical ceilings.

If successful, this positions Volcano Engine not just as a domestic Chinese alternative, but as a legitimate global competitor in enterprise AI solutions. Furthermore, pairing a ground-up foundational model with their highly advanced SeeDance video generation technology could give ByteDance an unprecedented edge in multimodal AI. This long game fundamentally alters the geopolitical balance of AI power, proving that ByteDance is willing to absorb massive short-term R&D costs to eventually own the underlying infrastructure of the next internet era.
