Anthropic has abruptly halted its controversial plan to force token-based billing on developers using the Claude Agent SDK, temporarily sparing power users from a massive spike in operational costs. The pricing shift, originally scheduled to take effect on Monday, threatened to severely impact developers relying heavily on automated agent harnesses and third-party tools.
According to developer Matthew Diakonov, users relying on the Claude Opus model as their primary coding assistant would have blown past their breakeven point within the first week under the new model. The team behind the code editor Zed also issued warnings to its user base regarding the impending financial hit. However, Anthropic reversed course at the last minute. The company updated its billing support page, stating it is "pausing the changes to Claude Agent SDK usage" and that "for now, nothing has changed." Some users also reported receiving official email notices confirming the delay, according to discussions on Reddit.
The sudden pullback arrives just weeks after GitHub Copilot introduced its own token-based billing structure, which resulted in severe sticker shock for developers who rapidly exceeded their new subscription limits. For Anthropic, the pricing friction coincides with major corporate milestones; the AI startup is currently preparing for a potential initial public offering, having recently submitted confidential papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Despite the reprieve, developers should prepare to eventually bear the full cost of their token consumption. In April, Boris Cherny, Head of Claude Code at Anthropic, warned that standard flat-rate subscriptions were never designed to support the heavy usage patterns generated by third-party automated tools like OpenClaw.
