Meta Rolls Out Free 'Facebook Verified' Badge to Combat AI Bots

Meta Rolls Out Free 'Facebook Verified' Badge to Combat AI Bots

Meta is rolling out a free Facebook Verified badge to help users prove they are real humans in an era increasingly dominated by deceptive AI. The new feature requires a quick video selfie to confirm identity, aiming to build trust across high-interaction spaces on the platform. This announcement arrives alongside the reveal of Meta's new standalone Seller app for business owners on Facebook Marketplace.

To secure the badge, users must submit a short video selfie, which Meta's systems will match against the account's existing profile photos. The verification check takes just a few minutes and, unlike the premium Meta Verified subscription for creators, requires absolutely no monthly fee. Once approved, the badge remains on the account indefinitely to signal that there’s a real person behind an account.

The rollout is currently prioritizing areas where human authenticity is critical, including Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Dating, Groups, and main profile pages. Meta plans to expand the badge's visibility to standard Feed posts at a later date. Interestingly, this move closely follows Google's recent introduction of a similar video selfie log-in method, highlighting an industry-wide shift toward biometric human validation.

Who is Eligible for the Free Badge?

Meta is deploying the feature in phased regional rollouts, starting in select markets before expanding globally. Because this tool is designed specifically for everyday users rather than brands, it comes with strict eligibility parameters.

  • Age Requirement: Account holders must be at least 18 years old.
  • Account Type: The feature is strictly restricted to personal profiles. It is currently not available for Pages or ProMode accounts.
  • Account Standing: Users must maintain good standing under Meta’s Community Standards, with no history of deceptive practices or inauthentic behavior.

The End of the Anonymous Era on Social Media

Meta's decision to offer a free verification tier is a massive strategic pivot. For the past few years, the blue checkmark was heavily monetized, creating a two-tier system where only paying subscribers or massive influencers could easily prove their identity. By democratizing the verification process, Meta is directly addressing the rampant scam culture on Facebook Marketplace and the growing flood of AI-generated bot accounts.

This free badge effectively separates platform integrity from premium customer support. While paying subscribers will likely still receive algorithmic boosts and direct account support, everyday users now have a frictionless way to prove they are human. Furthermore, processing millions of video selfies will give Meta an unprecedented dataset to refine its facial recognition and anti-fraud algorithms, setting a new baseline for digital identity verification across the web.
