Comcast Turns Millions of Xfinity Routers Into Wi-Fi Motion Detectors

Comcast has transformed millions of its standard home routers into invisible security sensors. Through a free software update, compatible Xfinity Gateway routers can now detect physical movement inside your home by analyzing disruptions in Wi-Fi signals. This allows the system to send instant push notifications to your smartphone without requiring any new cameras or dedicated security hardware.

Designed for Xfinity internet subscribers looking for a baseline layer of home awareness, the feature - dubbed WiFi Motion - brings ambient sensing technology to the mainstream. While companies like Linksys and Wiz have experimented with Wi-Fi sensing in the past, Comcast’s massive hardware footprint makes this one of the largest deployments of the technology to date. The system relies on the physical properties of radio waves, monitoring the signal strength between the router and connected smart devices to detect when a person walks through the invisible Wi-Fi mesh.

Because this feature relies on analyzing signal disruptions, its effectiveness depends heavily on the placement of your connected devices. WiFi Motion works best when devices like smart TVs, Wi-Fi extenders, and smart speakers are strategically spread across areas with strong signal coverage. The feature is disabled by default and requires manual activation.

1. Open the Xfinity app and navigate to the Home tab.
2. Locate the awareness card and tap on Turn on WiFi Motion.
3. Select up to five compatible Wi-Fi-connected devices to act as sensor nodes, or accept Xfinity's automated recommendations.
4. Adjust your Motion Sensitivity settings (Low, Medium, or High) to dictate how much movement triggers an alert.
5. Enable Pet Detection filtering to prevent smaller signal disruptions - like a dog walking through the room - from triggering false push notifications.

According to Xfinity, the feature is currently compatible with several gateway models, specifically the Technicolor TXB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1, and XER10. Users can also toggle between built-in monitoring modes to silence notifications when they are actively moving around the house.

While WiFi Motion is a clever use of existing hardware, it introduces a significant shift in what your Internet Service Provider (ISP) knows about your physical life. Comcast explicitly notes that data generated by WiFi Motion is stored in its cloud for seven days. More importantly, the company acknowledges it may be required to hand over this movement data in response to a valid subpoena, court order, or search warrant.

This transforms the humble home router into a potential digital witness. Law enforcement could theoretically subpoena your ISP to prove whether someone was physically moving inside a house at a specific time - a level of physical tracking ISPs have never possessed before. Furthermore, while it adds a layer of awareness, it cannot replace a dedicated home security system; it cannot tell you who triggered the alert or record what they did. For users who prioritize privacy over convenience, leaving the feature disabled is the safest route.
