The cryptocurrency industry is aggressively escalating its political influence, with a political action committee funded by Coinbase and Ripple Labs pouring over $2 million into a Florida congressional race. The Protect Progress PAC, an affiliate of the crypto-backed Fairshake, launched a media campaign opposing Democratic candidate Oliver Gilbert in Florida’s 24th district, despite his lack of a prominent public stance on digital assets.
The targeted seat is currently held by Representative Frederica Wilson, who previously voted against key industry legislation, including the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act and the GENIUS Act. Wilson recently endorsed Gilbert for the seat. Meanwhile, Shevrin Jones, a rival Democratic candidate who led early August polls, completed a questionnaire earning him a "strongly supports" rating from the Stand With Crypto advocacy group.
In response to the targeted ad campaign, Gilbert accused the PAC of being a front for "[Donald] Trump’s tech billionaire buddies" and "crypto con artists trying to buy a Democratic primary." Defending the campaign, a Fairshake spokesperson stated that "the underlying facts in our ad are true," though they declined to comment on the specific strategic reasoning behind the multimillion-dollar expenditures.
This localized spending is part of a massive national lobbying effort ahead of the 2026 midterms. Fairshake reported a $193 million war chest as of January, strategically deployed through affiliates like Protect Progress for Democrats and Defend American Jobs for Republicans. By June, the PAC had already spent over $82 million across various primaries and special elections to influence voters.
The crypto lobby's financial footprint extends across multiple states to impact party control in 2027. Protect Progress allocated over $150,000 to support Lois Frankel in Florida’s 23rd district. Simultaneously, Defend American Jobs spent a combined $1.5 million backing Republican candidates, including Representative Nick Begich in Alaska, Sydney Gruters in Florida’s 16th district, and Representative Harriet Hageman in Wyoming.
The Crypto Lobby's Offensive Pivot
The deployment of a $193 million war chest signals a fundamental shift in how the digital asset industry handles government regulation. Instead of merely fighting defensive battles against the SEC in court, companies like Coinbase and Ripple are actively engineering a favorable legislative environment from the ground up.
