ChatGPT Now Generates Custom Stickers for WhatsApp and iMessage
AI Image Generated

Creating personalized stickers for group chats usually requires juggling third-party apps and manual background-removal tools. OpenAI is eliminating that friction by allowing users to generate, edit, and export ChatGPT custom stickers directly into iMessage and WhatsApp. The new integration leverages AI image generation to turn everyday photos and inside jokes into shareable chat assets in seconds.

Following recent code leaks, OpenAI officially rolled out the feature, enabling users to upload single or multiple images from their camera roll. ChatGPT can then transform these images into stickers with transparent backgrounds. The AI can also remix the images, add or remove specific elements, and apply artistic styles based on text prompts.

During initial testing, the tool demonstrated advanced capabilities beyond basic cropping. By simply uploading a photo and prompting the AI to create an iMessage sticker, ChatGPT successfully generated an asset with a clean transparent background. It even utilized outpainting technology to restore cropped-out details, such as the top of a subject's head, ensuring a polished final image.

How to Export ChatGPT Stickers to Your Chats

Once your sticker is ready, a new "Add to chat apps" button appears within the ChatGPT interface. Users can currently choose from three export destinations to share their creations:

  • iMessage: Stickers are sent directly to a dedicated ChatGPT section within the Messages app's Stickers carousel.
  • WhatsApp: You must export a minimum of three stickers at once, which is a strict requirement set by Meta, not an OpenAI limitation.
  • Save to photos: Downloads the transparent image directly to your device's local storage for manual sharing.

The End of Standalone Sticker Apps

This update is a quiet but significant blow to the ecosystem of ad-heavy, third-party sticker maker apps that have dominated app stores for years. By integrating seamless background removal, outpainting, and direct export into a single workflow, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a daily utility rather than just a research or productivity tool.

Furthermore, Meta's three-sticker minimum for WhatsApp highlights the ongoing friction between closed messaging ecosystems and third-party AI integrations. While iMessage allows for spontaneous, single-sticker exports, Meta's restriction forces users to build complete packs, slightly hindering the rapid, one-off meme creation that makes this ChatGPT feature so appealing.
