Professor Layton and the New World of Steam Breaks Nintendo Exclusivity, Coming to PS5 and PC

Fans of the iconic puzzle-solving franchise no longer need to rely exclusively on Nintendo hardware, as Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is officially expanding its release to PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. Announced during the Level-5 Vision 2026 Craftsmanship event, the highly anticipated sequel is targeting a worldwide launch toward the end of 2026. Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino confirmed that core gameplay development is nearly complete, with the team now focusing on visual polish and international localization.

The narrative picks up exactly one year after the emotional events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. The beloved duo reunites in America within the borders of Steam Bison, a rapidly developing town powered by revolutionary steam technology that has surpassed even London in its industrial advancements. Naturally, a mysterious incident in this heavily mechanized city draws Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice, Luke Triton, into a massive new investigation.

To modernize the classic formula, Level-5 is introducing several mechanical upgrades to the franchise. The game will feature full 3D cutscenes, an interactive world map, and updated movement systems that allow players to solve puzzles that directly help Steam Bison grow. PC and PlayStation players will also benefit from dedicated mouse support, ensuring smooth navigation outside of the traditional touch controls.

The puzzle design is being spearheaded by QuizKnock, a popular Japanese educational media platform led by Takuji Izawa. According to the developers, this entry will feature the highest number of puzzles in the franchise's history. Key gameplay additions include:

• Falcon (Akio Otsuka): An eagle who gathers treasures and hates being called a vulture.

The decision to bring Professor Layton and the New World of Steam to the PS5 and Steam represents a massive strategic pivot for Level-5. Historically, the mainline Layton games have been system-sellers for the Nintendo DS and 3DS families.
