InsurTech Startup Ominimo Hits €1.4 Billion Unicorn Status Just Two Years After Launch

InsurTech Startup Ominimo Hits €1.4 Billion Unicorn Status Just Two Years After Launch

Ominimo, a Serbian-Hungarian InsurTech startup, has officially reached unicorn status following a Series B funding round led by the venture capital arm of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Valued at a staggering €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion), the profitable company achieved this milestone just two years after its inception.

For the European tech ecosystem and the motor insurance sector, this rapid ascent signals a major shift toward data-driven underwriting. Rather than burning cash to survive, Ominimo plans to use the fresh capital to secure its own insurance license, expand its AI capabilities, and aggressively scale across new international markets.

Exponential Growth and Data-Driven Strategy

Founded in 2024 by Dusan Komar, Dennis Weinbender, and Laslo Horvath, the company leverages proprietary technology to deliver highly segmented motor insurance pricing. This approach has yielded explosive financial results. The startup's annualized gross written premium run-rate surged from €26.3 million ($30 million) in 2024 to €157.8 million ($180 million) in 2025, and currently sits at approximately €306.8 million ($350 million).

This growth builds on a successful Series A round closed in 2025 at a €200 million valuation, which brought Zurich Insurance on board as a strategic distribution partner and minority shareholder. To maintain its technical edge, Ominimo has built a highly specialized workforce. Of its roughly 130 employees, two-thirds are dedicated to data science and software development, including eight Mathematics Olympiad medallists and one Physics Olympiad medallist. The company aims to expand its headcount to 150 by the end of the year.

Global Expansion Roadmap

Currently operating in Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, and Sweden, Ominimo is preparing for a massive geographical footprint expansion. The new funding will facilitate entry into several key markets:

  • Belgium, Romania, Spain, Italy, and France in the near term.
  • The United States, with operations slated to begin in 2027.

The AI Advantage in Legacy Markets

Ominimo’s trajectory from launch to a €1.4 billion valuation in just 24 months is a masterclass in execution, but its profitability is the real story here. In an era where many InsurTechs struggle with high customer acquisition costs and heavy underwriting losses, Ominimo’s €306.8 million premium run-rate proves that hyper-segmented, AI-driven pricing actually works at scale.

By employing Olympiad-level mathematicians rather than traditional actuaries, the company is treating insurance as a pure data science problem. As they move to secure their own insurance license and prepare for a highly competitive US launch in 2027, traditional legacy insurers should be on high alert. Ominimo is no longer just a distribution partner; it is rapidly evolving into a full-stack competitor capable of undercutting legacy pricing models.
