Blockchain security firm AmericanFortress has unveiled a new quantum-safe crypto wallet scheme designed to protect existing digital assets without requiring users to migrate funds or change addresses. The proposal aims to secure blockchain networks against future quantum computing threats, which a recent Bloomberg analysis estimates could leave up to $470 billion in Bitcoin vulnerable to attacks.
Unlike traditional post-quantum approaches that force users to generate entirely new wallets, the AmericanFortress scheme allows existing wallet addresses to remain unchanged. The company detailed the mechanism in a technical paper published on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, noting that the system is fully compatible with seed-based hierarchical deterministic wallets used across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and other networks relying on elliptic curve cryptography.
The proposed architecture leverages zero-knowledge proofs derived from a wallet's original seed phrase, bypassing the need to replace the underlying elliptic curve cryptography. Participating network nodes would verify these proofs, allowing users to continue signing transactions with their existing keys seamlessly. The technical paper is currently awaiting peer review.
Hardware Alternatives: Freedom Factory's PQ1
AmericanFortress is not alone in the race to secure digital assets against next-generation computing threats. Freedom Factory recently unveiled the PQ1, a post-quantum hardware wallet specifically designed for Ethereum and other Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks.
Taking a hardware-centric approach, the PQ1 generates post-quantum cryptographic signatures directly on dedicated physical devices. The wallet utilizes SPHINCS+C10 signatures combined with ERC-4337 smart accounts to shield transactions from potential quantum decryption.
The Industry Race for Post-Quantum Security
The broader blockchain industry is rapidly accelerating its post-quantum research, acknowledging that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could eventually break the cryptographic foundations of major networks. While these machines do not yet exist, proactive migration strategies are already in motion.
A Strategy-led consortium recently pledged $15 million to fund Bitcoin quantum security research. Simultaneously, the Ethereum Foundation published a proposal outlining a roadmap for migrating accounts to quantum-resistant cryptography, while Algorand has committed to introducing quantum-resistant accounts by 2027.
The Seamless Migration Advantage
The AmericanFortress proposal highlights a critical vulnerability in standard post-quantum migration plans: user friction. Forcing millions of cryptocurrency holders to manually transfer funds to new, quantum-resistant addresses creates a massive logistical nightmare and opens the door to widespread phishing attacks and user errors during the transition.
By utilizing zero-knowledge proofs to secure existing seed phrases, AmericanFortress effectively eliminates the "migration panic." If this backward-compatible approach proves mathematically sound in peer review, it could become the blueprint for how major layer-1 networks upgrade their security protocols, ensuring that dormant wallets and long-term holders are not left vulnerable when quantum supremacy is eventually achieved.
